Provinces, local govs to get radio royalties

KATHMANDU: The provinces and local governments are all set to get royalties collected from the distribution of radio frequencies. The National Natural Resources and Finance Commission has been distributing such royalties to the federal government only.  However, both levels have been getting royalties collected from forestry, electricity, mountaineering, and mining and minerals.

Juddha Bahadur Gurung, a member of the commission, said the decision has been made to recommend that the government distribute the royalty of radio frequencies to provinces and local governments.

The commission stated that the radio frequency royalties will be distributed as practiced in other royalties (federal government 50 percent, provincial and local government 25 percent each).

During the fiscal year 2020/21, the government had collected royalties worth Rs 3.53 billion in frequency fees and Rs 3.73 billion in royalty. Provinces and local governments will get around Rs 3.5 billion if the commission’s recommendation is implemented by the government. The recommendation is being reviewed by the Ministry of Finance.
