US to build the world’s largest green hydrogen storage

KATHMANDU: The US is developing the world’s largest green hydrogen storage in the State of Utah. Aces Delta, Mitsubishi Power Americas, and Magnum Development are going to build an underground hydrogen storage facility with a capacity of 300 GWh. Two underground storage houses with a capacity of 150 GWh each are meant for storing green hydrogen generated by the 840 MW hydrogen plant operating around the planned storage project.

To set up the green hydrogen storage facility, a loan worth USD 405.4 million has been assured by the US Department of Energy (DOE). According to Aces Delta, 30 percent of green hydrogen and 70 percent of natural gas will be deposited in storage in the beginning with the target to store 100 percent green hydrogen by 2045. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2025.

Targeting the storage project, renewable energy will be converted into green hydrogen through a 220 MW  capacity electrolyzer.
