KATHMANDU: In an effort to promote green hydrogen production in Nepal, the Nepal government and the Melbourne Institute of Technology (MIT) Group of Foundation are jointly organizing the ‘Nepal Green Hydrogen Summit’ on October 10-11 in Kathmandu.
MIT Group Foundation, Global NRN Foundation, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation are jointly organizing the two-day summit, which is the first of its kind in Nepal. The slogan of the Summit is ‘Nepal Green Hydrogen Summit: Antidote for Melting Glaciers’. The goal of the Summit is to support the development of a green hydrogen economy and guarantee food security in Nepal.
Shesh Ghale, the chairman of the Foundation told a press conference in Kathmandu on Tuesday that the Summit is aimed at sensitizing the significance of green hydrogen in Nepal also as deliberations on it have intensified across the world.
“Nepal also should utilize the technology to generate green hydrogen. Realizing that it is high time for Nepal to prioritize green hydrogen, we are organizing the two-day Summit in Nepal,” said Ghale. The Summit will discuss the feasibility of producing green hydrogen in Nepal and explore the measures to mitigate impact of climate change in Nepal through generate and use of green hydrogen. Stating many countries are already involved in the study, production, storage, and marketing of green hydrogen, Ghale suggested that Nepal come up with a policy that promotes green hydrogen.
The Summit is relevant at a time when Nepal is committed to achieving a net-zero target by 2045. Chief Executive Officer of Wind Power Kushal Gurung informed the press conference that the summit will discuss the latest technology, financial management, and policies in green hydrogen.
Government officials, private sector representatives, development partners, multi-lateral agencies, UN Agencies, foreign diplomats, experts, and companies involved in green hydrogen and others will participate in the Summit. The Summit is expected to create a foundation for policy reforms for innovative financing modality, foreign direct investment, additional involvement of the private sector, and use of technology for green hydrogen promotion.
