KATHMANDU: Office of the Investment Nepal (OIBN) granted a study license to India’s state-owned National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC) for the West Seti Reservoir Project on Thursday. Sushil Bhatta, Chief Executive Officer of the Investment Board handed over the study license to the NHPC’s Deputy General Manage Ashok Kumar Joshi at a program organized at OIBN.
“We issued a study license after completing a necessary procedure, in response to the application filed by the NHPC last month at OIBN. We have also urged NHPC to complete the study within the stipulated time,” said Bhatta.
The NHPC is responsible to submit the preliminary study report to the OIBN within three months and the final report within 21 months from the date of issuance of the license. Two months back, OIBN and NHPC signed a Memorandum of Understanding to conduct a study of the West Seti Project. The 52nd meeting of IBN held in July decided to give permission to the NHPC to develop the project, which is providing 21.9 percent power to the Nepal government free of cost. The power generated from the Rs 168 billion- project will be evacuated directly to India.
