Locals vandalise Sanjen Project office over shares

KATHMANDU: The locals of Gallang village of Amachhodingmo rural municipality-3 of Rasuwa vandalised the district office of Sanjen Hydropower Project in Rasuwa demanding a fair share in the project.

The Gallang village residents who are moderately affected by the project, have vented ire at project officials stating that they were not treated at par with the most affected area people in the process of share allocation.

The project said the enraged residents reached the local office in a large crowd and ransacked the office and vehicles parked at office premises. They are demanding that the project provide an equal amount of project shares to them as have been allocated for residents of Ward No. 5 of the same rural municipality, the most affected area.

The furious locals manhandled the project staffers who were working at the office at that time. Some of the staff are reported to have sustained injury due to the attack. The company has clarified that since the Securities Board Nepal has already given permission to issue shares as per the previous decision, it cannot be changed at the last moment. The date for issuing 36,50,000 ordinary shares allocated for Rasuwa residents was fixed for the 5th of August.  The project-affected people will be able to apply for a minimum of 10 to 700 shares for each. The company has already issued and distributed shares for investors and the general public. The 14.8 MW Upper Sanjen and 42.5 MW Sanjen Hydropower projects being implemented in Rasuwa are in the final stages of construction.
