Experts prescribe integrated public transport for big cities

KATHMANDU: Experts in the transport sector have said that the Multilateral Integrated Public Transport System has been successful in the effective management of public transport in metropolitan cities. In a program organized by the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Professor Shivananda Swami of the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology University (CEPT) of India shared the experience of India’s big cities in transport management.

Swami said that a single public transport system will not meet the needs of all the service seekers in the big cities and added that only a multilaterally integrated public transport system will solve the transport problems.

According to Swami, the establishment of a unified metropolitan transport system has proved itself effective in order to organize the transportation of metropolitan cities.

Swami also said that even with the willpower of the political leadership, improvements can be made in the urban transport system. Bekhzod Rakhmatov, economic affairs officer of UNESCAP, said that although there are various types of transportation in South Asia.

According to Rakhmatov, there is a large number of two-wheelers in this region.  The network of informal transport systems in Asian countries is also large, and the use of personal vehicles has also increased due to the epidemic.

“While the metro rail operation in Kathmandu appears to be effective, a significant investment is required to make it happen. Similarly, if a large space is required for bus rapid transport, a suitable geographical location will also be required for the operation of only cable cars” said Rakhmatov.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s General Manager Ram Gopal Sharma also gave a presentation on the success of Metro Rail in New Delhi.

Sharma said that after the success of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, metro rail plans have also been started in the metro cities of other states. The corporation is now doing all the consulting work for Metro Rail and has worked on Dhaka Metro Rail.
