KATHMANDU: Finance Minister Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat presented a budget worth Rs 1751.31 billion for the coming fiscal year 2023/24. Finance Minister Mahat announced the budget at a joint session of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly on Monday.
Of the total budget, Rs 1141.78 representing 65.20 percent, is allocated for regular expenditure while Rs. 302.07 billion or 17.25 percent and Rs 307.45 billion or 17.55 percent are arranged for capital expenditure and debt servicing respectively.
The budget is 2.37 percent lower than the current fiscal year’s allocation and 16.37 percent higher than the revised estimate. Of the total allocation, Rs 400.08 billion has been set aside for financial transfer to provinces and local levels.
A total of Rs 1248.62 billion will be arranged from revenue sources while Rs 49.94 billion will be sourced from foreign grants. To fulfill the deficit in the budgetary sources, the government is planning to secure a foreign loan worth Rs 212.75 billion and mobilize domestic debt amounting to Rs 240 billion.
Announcing the budgetary arrangement for the coming fiscal year Finance Minister Mahat stated that the budget is focused on efficiently dealing with the current economic problems facing the country. “We are hopeful that the existing economic problems in the country will be resolved if we implement the programs announced in the budget,” said Mahat.
